A GREATER WORLD | UN MONDE PLUS GRAND | OmU

FR & BEL 2019 | 100′ | Screenplay Claire Barré together with director Fabienne Berthaud | Cinematography Nathalie Durand

After the death of the love of her life, Corine travels to Mongolia to record traditional songs of reindeer herders. An encounter with the shaman Oyun upsets her journey and her life. When Corine falls into a trance during a ceremony, the shaman reveals that she has a rare gift and needs to be trained in the shamanic traditions. Corine objects to this calling. In France, she undergoes psychiatric and neurological examinations. Finally, she returns to Mongolia to begin her initiation and discover a larger world.

The film tells the true story of Corine Sombrun, who since her training as a shaman has helped neurologists and brain researchers to study the neurological processes during a trance state and use the findings for therapeutic treatments.

Joker | OmU

USA 2019 | 122’ | written by Scott Silver & Todd Phillips & Bob Kane | directed by Todd Phillips |
staring Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, Zazie Beetz

Surprisingly psychological and realistic the film tells the transformation of Arthur Fleck into the Joker – known as Batman’s antagonist.
A cinematic delight – especially for sceptics of comic book adaptations.

Arthur Fleck lives with his illness-stricken mother in a run-down apartment building. All he wants is to make people laugh, but he is bullied: by his colleagues in a small entertainment company, by drunken Wall Street bankers in the underground and even by a group of teenagers whom he then beats up. THE JOKER by Todd Phillips is the story of a brutalisation and demoralisation in our time. Fleck, alias Joker, is a beaten, maltreated human being with a severe childhood trauma.
This tortured soul is portrayed outstandingly by the emaciated Joaquin Phoenix. He was deservedly honoured with an Oscar for his outstanding acting interpretation in the film surprise of 2019.

USA 1974 | 131’ | written by Robert Towne & Roman Polanski | directed by Roman Polanski | produced by Robert Evans |
starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, John Huston

A private detective. A femme fatale. A family secret. Sex & Crime & Politics.
The plot is based on real events of the California Water Wars and the bursting of the St Francis Dam in the beginning of the 20th century. The Californian hydraulic engineer William Mulholland served as role model for the character of Hollis Mulwray. Producer Robert Evans, screenwriter Robert Towne and director Roman Polanski set the family drama in an atmosphere of distrust and shady morals – characteristic for film noir. The screenplay won an Oscar in 1975 as well as numerous other awards. The best film noir of all time.

Van Gogh’s life was dominated by art and illness, euphoria and horror, desire, suffering and passion. The son of a priest longed for love and was exhausted in art.

Due to the outstanding cast this filmography became a classic of the genre. It follows the biographical facts with care and respect and shows the most important moments in van Gogh’s life: his missionary work in the Belgian mining area of Borinage, his relations with his brother and Paul Gauguin, the lack of understanding in his neighborhood, his financial difficulties and his early death in Auvers-sur-Oise. The film impressively and excitingly conveys the creation of some masterpieces by this exceptional artist. Kirk Douglas, who celebrated his 103rd birthday on 9 December 2019, was deservedly nominated for an Oscar for his interpretation of the great painter.

SÉRAPHINE | OmU

FR | BE 2008 | 125′ | directed by Martin Provost | screenplay by Martin Provost and Marc Abdelnour | cast: Yolande Moreau, Ulrich Tukur, Anne Bennent

The true story of Séraphine Louis / de Senlis (1864-1942). Heavenly voices command the bitterly poor, uneducated, unkempt, elderly caregiver to paint night after night. As if possessed, Séraphine creates picture after picture with abstracted floral, psychedelic motifs. In 1912 the German art collector Wilhelm Uhde discovers the talent of his quirky cleaning lady. The film “Séraphine” focuses on this encounter.

Christian Tilman writes on 17.12.2019 in Der Tagesspiegel: “SÉRAPHINE draws a difficult psychogram, without fear of exposure and embarrassment. At the centre is the so precarious relationship between Séraphine and Wilhelm Uhde. For no sooner has the art connoisseur, played with understatement by Ulrich Tukur, discovered that his so quirky cleaning lady has secret talents than professional interest awakens – and perhaps more. The result is a strange love story without love between the two outsiders…”

Ulrich Tukur: “It is one of the most successful films I have been allowed to participate in. Quietly and unagitated, it unfolds a silent world that seems to be still intact, but then turns out to be just as fragile as anything threatened by unpredictable life”.

The justifiably award-winning performance of the incomparable Yolande Moreau, the bitterly poor, solitary woman and Malian maid possessed by heavenly voices, is grandiose. “What fascinates me,” says the Belgian actress, “is Séraphine’s will not to let go of art. From the start she was fragile, lonely, suffering. She has found a way out in painting. Today Séraphine de Senlis, together with Henri Rousseau, is one of the most famous naive painters.

DHEEPAN – DÄMONEN UND WUNDER | F 2015 | 115 min | OmU
Regie & Drehbuch: Jacques Audiard | Drehbuch: Thomas Bidegain, Noé Debré
Darsteller*innen: Antonythasan Jesuthasan, Kalieaswari Srinivasan

– Deutschlandfunk

GRAPES OF WRATH – FRÜCHTE DES ZORNS | USA 1940 | 129 min | OmU
Regie: John Ford | Drehbuch: Nunnally Hunter Johnson nach dem Roman von John Steinbeck|
Darsteller*innen: Henry Fonda, Jane Darwell, John Carradine
